Speaker: Susan Hapgood

January 21, 2010 | 6.30 pm
Seminar Hall, CSMVS, Mumbai

Susan Hapgood will present a talk which will address various approaches to curating exhibitions of contemporary art, looking at some of the ways the practice has changed in recent years. She will use specific examples from iCI’s program (Independent Curators International, New York) and question the role of the curator in the current globalized art environment, leading to the discussion of future initiatives underway at the iCI.

Susan Hapgood is director of exhibitions at iCI, where she develops and manages all of the exhibitions that are traveling and in formation; and a Senior Fellow at the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at the New School. She has worked in a curatorial capacity for institutions including the Guggenheim Museum, the American Federation of Arts, and the New Museum, and as program director for the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation. Hapgood has lectured extensively at universities and museums, including teaching a course at the School of Visual Arts in New York, and serving as a guest lecturer at institutions such as New York University, the New School, the University of Louisiana in Lafayette, Northwestern University, ARCO in Madrid, College Art
Association, and at the Menil Collection in Houston. She received a B.A. from the University of Rochester and M.A. in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.

iCI (Independent Curators International) produces exhibitions, events, publications, and training opportunities for diverse audiences around the world. A catalyst for independent thinking, iCI connects emerging and established curators, artists, and institutions, to forge international networks and generate new forms of collaboration. Working across disciplines and historical precedents, the organization is a hub that provides access to the people, ideas, and practices that are key to current developments in the field, inspiring fresh ways of seeing and contextualizing contemporary art.

This program is organized in association with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalay (CSMVS), The Museum Society of Bombay and Cymroza Art Gallery, Mumbai.
