Et Qui Libre? (And who is free?): A Homage to Marcel Duchamp

Born in UK in 1943, Virginia Whiles holds a post-graduate degree in Art History for her thesis on Tibetan Art. She has lectured on Art History in a number of universities. She is also well-known as an art critic and curator of solo and group exhibitions and conferences. She lives in Paris and has her studio in Drome.

Virginia Whiles will analyse the ideas and work of Marcel Duchamp (1887 – 1968) and also discuss the exhibition and conference held in May 1994 in honour of Duchamp and his influence on contemporary art. The lecture will be illustrated with slides of Duchamp’s work and of work by ten artists selected for the event. Summary of conference papers presented by some of the prominent participants such as Richard Hamilton, Jean Sequet, Thierry De Duve and Sarat Maharaj will also be touched upon.
