The subject of this second lecture by Geeta Kapur has the central motif of cultural self-realisation through art. The lecture presents, first, a modernist aesthetic wherein the artist is seen to elicit the image that aspires simultaneously to greater autonomy and universal address. It argues, second, for an open avowal of an avant-grade, connecting our own pressing concerns with those of other artists in the world working to intervene and shape a radically humane internationalism, the more as it is threatened by market globalism.
